Transmission Competes with Joe Cocker and George Thorogood in the Hunter Valley
At a recent party in Pokolbin, a Transmission quartet featuring Tim, Lesa, Justen and Mal, pumped out the funk and jazz to an enthusiastic crowd at a private party at a wine estate. Nothing unusual here, except that on this occasion, between sets, we could hear the rumbling sound of Joe Cocker and George Thorogood’s bands wafting across the valley. While Joe and George pulled a bigger crowd than us, the jazz and funk freaks at the party had an absolute ball, with some joining in on vocals. A great night in the Hunter! Thanks to Crazyhorse Ent for the gig.
TRANSMISSION SUPPORTS THE REBECCA AND SCOTT DOIG FUND RAISER
At one time or another our lives are touched by the tragedy illness brings. For Rebecca and Scott Doig, their tragedy is magnified by the knowledge that their first child, due in April this year, will grow up without a mother. In late 2009 at the age of 31 Rebecca Doig became the first woman in the world to be diagnosed with a rare form of degenerative Alzheimer’s.
Transmission played at the recent fundraising event for the Doigs, hosted by members of Hornsby Council. The band was pleased to support the Doigs in raising much needed funds.
TRANSMISSION GETS GREAT REVIEW AT CAP FUNCTION
Transmission performed recently at the Christians Against Poverty Function at the Ballroom of Epping RSL. With over 150 guests the band provided excellent jazz entertainment in the early part of the evening before filling the dance floor with three brackets of dance hits. Featuring the full band including guests, Tim McInnes on bass, and Andrew Hamblin on trumpet, the band was pleased to support the function which raised tens of thousands to assist those in poverty.
TEACHERS FROM WILLIAM CLARKE SCHOOL GROOVE TO TRANSMISSION
At the recent annual William Clarke School dinner at Epping RSL, teachers grooved and danced to the sounds of Transmission, as they recessed from their yearly planning conference. The crowd was just so enthusiastic. It was a delight to perform for them. During the evening we were pleased to see some of the teachers get up an have a go on our instruments as well. All in good fun! What a great evening!
SCOTT KELLY HEADING TO THE BIG APPLE
Our resident saxophonist, Scott Kelly, has decided to take leave from the band to attend the Manhattan School of Music in New York. His time at the Big Apple music school will be credited towards his degree at the Sydney Conservatorium. All in Transmission wish Scott well for his studies in New York. Its great to have played with you Scott and we look forward to your return in due course.
Justen Stoodley will fill in for Scott while he is away. Welcome Justen!
THE BALLAD OF GISELLA AND SEBASTIAN
Transmission traveled to Bowral on Friday 4th December to play at the wedding reception of Gisella and Sebastian at a local vineyard. Now, we get many requests to do different songs, but when asked to play the Boys Town Gang version of 'Cant Take My Eyes Off You' for the bridal dance, we did not know what to expect. Well, as we played the introduction, the artful bride and groom swept across the reception lounge floor in graceful disco moves that made the Boys Town Gang version look like child's play. This delighted the raucous crowd who showed their pleasure by joining the happy couple for three sets of great music and dancing. What a night!
GREEN POINT COMMUNITY GROOVE TO TRANSMISSION!
Transmission featured at a recent Christmas event for the Green Point Community. Playing on the oval of Green Point Christian School the band enjoyed the excellent stage and sound system which was shared with other artists on the night. Transmission played three sets and entertained a very appreciative crowd of over 300 with a blend of jazz, funk and soul numbers. The event also featured Christmas carols by candle light led by a very able choir from Green Point Baptist Church. The band really enjoyed playing to the enthusiastic Central Coast crowd. Thanks to Justen Stoodley who filled in for Scott Kelly on tenor sax.
TRANSMISSION SUPPORTS TRAUMAID AT RECENT FUNDRAISING EVENT!
Transmission was delighted to support Traumaid at its fundraising event on Friday 30th October. Traumaid is a mission organisation which works in Congo rehabilitating women and children ravaged by war. Managing Director Dr Jenny Dawson, who is renowned for developing innovative methods of educating and treating the illiterate for trauma, asked Transmission to contribute to the evening.
Over 250 attended and enjoyed a cool jazz set before the band launched into two sets of great dancing material . The band members were all supportive of Traumaid and with over $100,000 raised on the night, it was a great success.
Many thanks to Chris West and Lindsay Wrinkler for sitting in for Lesa and Scott who were absent.
TRANSMISSION GETS BLOWN AWAY FOR HORNSBY COUNCIL.... ALMOST!
Transmission performed at Forest Park Epping, along with locals, Krystal Keller and Warren McClean on Sunday afternoon 27 September. The eager crowd were not only blown away by the quality of the music, but also by gale force winds sweeping through the trees. Micorphone stands, sheet music and cymbal stands were all victims to the heavenly gusts while the musos played on. Despite the winds, the afternoon was very pleasant for all who attended. Thanks to Hornsby Council for sponsoring the event and supporting live music.
TRANSMISSION PUMPS IT OUT AT BLACK STUMP
Transmission's inaugural performance at the Black Stump Festival in Sydney, on the October long weekend, was a huge success! The band played for 35 mins in the Supper Club, attracting hundreds of funk/soul enthusiasts who were grooving with the band's funky set of contemporary gospel and secular tunes. Gina, Emma and Nathan were in hot form, as were the rhythm section and horns, including guest trombonist, Rochelle Beeson (who stood in for Gareth).
Transmission were delighted to play at Blackstump, and were very honoured to receive some great feedback from Music Coordinator Gordon Barr. (See Testimonials page on this web site) We look forward to playing at Blackstump again in 2010.
